English Text
Long before he became the president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln was a poor boy who loved books. He did not grow up in a large house or attend a good school for many years. His early life was hard, but he had a strong wish to learn. A book could take him to places he had never seen and introduce him to people he would never meet.
Abraham was born in Kentucky in 1809. His family later moved to Indiana, where they lived in a small wooden house. Life there was not easy. His father worked on the farm, and Abraham had to help him. He cut trees, moved wood, and did many other jobs. After a long day of work, he was often tired. Yet he still wanted to read.
There were few chances to go to school, so Abraham learned much on his own. Whenever he could borrow a book, he was glad. He read by the light of a fire or a small lamp when the house grew dark. Sometimes he carried a book while walking to work. To other people, he might have looked like an ordinary farm boy. But inside his mind, a wide world was opening.
One book that stayed in his memory was a life story of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Abraham read about the struggles of the early American leaders and the new country they helped build. The book made him think about the past and the people who had worked to change their world. He began to see that learning about other people could help him understand his own time.
Reading did not make Abraham’s life easy. He still had to work hard, and he suffered a great loss when his mother died. He was only nine years old. Later, his father married Sarah Bush Johnston, who became a kind stepmother to Abraham. She encouraged his interest in books and learning. Her support was important to the boy who wanted to know more about the world.
As Abraham grew older, he took on different jobs. He worked with his hands, helped on farms, and later worked in a store. He also spent time listening to people and talking about the problems of his day. His reading gave him ideas, while his work brought him close to the lives of ordinary people. Little by little, he learned to speak clearly and think carefully.
In time, Abraham studied law and became a lawyer. He entered politics and was elected president in 1860. The country was deeply divided over slavery, and soon the Civil War began. As president, Lincoln faced some of the hardest choices in American history. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared enslaved people in areas still fighting against the United States to be free. The war continued, and many people suffered, but Lincoln worked to keep the country together.
Lincoln was killed in 1865, before the country could fully recover from the war. Today, people remember him as a leader who helped change the nation. Yet his story began with a boy who had little money and little time for school. He could not know where his life would lead. He only knew that books were worth carrying, even after a hard day’s work.
His life reminds us that learning does not always happen in a classroom. It can begin with a borrowed book, a quiet moment, and a question that stays in the mind. A small book may seem like a simple thing, but for a young reader, it can open a door to a much larger world.
