English Text
When I was young, I did not think about soup. It was just hot water with food in it. Now I see it in a different way. Soup is a quiet story about where we come from and how we live.
Last winter, I traveled a little for work. In the morning in a small town in northern Japan, an old woman gave me a small bowl of miso soup. It had tofu, seaweed, and green onion. In Mexico City a few months later, a friend picked me up at the bus station and took me straight to a market. We sat down and had a big bowl of chicken soup with lime and rice. The two soups looked very different, but both made me feel at home.
Soup is smart food. You can use what you have in the kitchen. A few vegetables, some water, a little salt. You can throw in yesterday’s rice or the last piece of chicken. You do not throw away food. You turn it into something warm and new. In many places, this is how families got through hard years. They could not buy a lot, but they could make one pot last for two days.
Recipes for soup are often passed down in the family. My friend in Mexico learned her soup from her mother. Her mother learned it from her own mother. No one writes it down. You watch, you pick up a little more each time, and then one day you can make it by yourself. When you move away, you carry that taste with you. When you feel tired or sick, you make that soup. It warms you up from the inside.
Now when I cook at home, I think about those bowls. I do not need special tools or rich food. I just need time. I cut the vegetables, I wait for the water to come to a boil, and I let the smell fill the kitchen. Soup teaches me to slow down, to use what I have, and to share it with other people. A small bowl can bring people together. That is why I still love it.
