Maya wanted to give her older brother, Luis, a special gift for his birthday. He often said that he did not need anything, so buying a present was hard. One Saturday, Maya found a box of old family photos in her closet. She sat down on the floor and began to look through them.
Some photos showed Luis as a little boy. In one, he was standing beside a large birthday cake with chocolate on his nose. Maya laughed. She had been too young to remember that day, but their mother had told the story many times. Other photos showed family trips, school days, and quiet afternoons at home.
