English Text

I am nine. Last summer, my dad and I went camping. We went to a place near a river. The place is called Miller Park. It is not really a park. It is woods and open fields.

We set up our tent. We made hot dogs on a small grill. When the sun went down, the sky turned dark blue, then black. Stars came out. So many stars.

Dad said, “Look up. Wait.”

I waited. At first, I saw nothing. Then something moved fast. Black shape. Then another. And another.

“Bats!” Dad said.

I had never seen bats outside of a book. They were small and fast. They did not hit us. They turned quickly in the air.

Dad whispered, “They are eating bugs. Some bats can eat a thousand bugs in one night. “

I watched them. They flew in circles, up and down. No lights. No sound I could hear. How do they see in the dark?

Dad told me they use sound. They make a sound we cannot hear. The sound bounces off bugs and trees and comes back. That tells them where things are. It is called echolocation.

We lay on the grass and watched for a long time. The bats kept flying. The river made a soft sound. The air was cool.

One bat flew low, right over our heads. I ducked, then laughed.

Later in the tent, I could still think about them. I thought, the night is not empty. It is full. Full of animals working while we sleep.

In the morning, we packed up. I looked for bats, but they were gone. They sleep during the day.

I will never forget that night. Before, I thought night was just dark. Now I know night has wings.
